Enclosed space entry: the new IMO recommendations, and why the permit stops at eight hours

In June 2025 the IMO adopted MSC.581(110), its revised recommendations for entering enclosed spaces aboard ships. It asks for more than the text it replaces — a register of every enclosed space, nobody entering alone, carbon dioxide on the list of gases — and it is blunt about time: the entry permit should never be longer than eight hours.
